Prime Video’s Every Year After hinges on a shocking twist. But does the big secret actually involve another love triangle between the two brothers?
Based on Carly Fortune’s Every Summer After, Every Year After is about Percy (Sadie Sauveall), who grew up vacationing in Barry’s Bay and spending time with the Florek brothers, Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie (Michael Bradway).
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Every Year After.
Years after his heartbreaking breakup with Sam, the two reunite, but there are things Percy keeps from repairing their relationship. She had sex with Charlie during a rough period with Sam. Sam revealed what he already knew about the shocking relationship in his Fortune book.
However, on screen, Sam is unaware of Percy and Charlie’s one-night stand (this time occurring after they officially broke up while Sam was attending college) and how it contributed to her breaking off relationships with him in the past.
Despite Percy’s personal ties to both Florek brothers, Fortune noted those who compared the surprise release of Every Year After to another successful book-to-film series from Prime Video, The Summer I Turned Pretty, which depicts the complicated love triangle between brothers Berry (Laura Tung), Jeremiah (Gavin Casaleño) and Conrad (Chris Blaney).
“It’s not about people choosing between other people,” Fortune, 42, exclusively explained her story to Us Weekly. “When you have the same kind of tension in a love triangle, that’s what a love triangle is. That’s not really the case. I think this show is very much about places that matter, and people and places that stay with us over the years. It’s about coming home.”
She continued, “It’s about how we grow and evolve, but the younger version of us is always with us. I think that’s a very gentle thing.”
Aurora Perrineau, who plays Chantal in the series, also shared her thoughts.
“I think it has the same longing as “The Summer of Becoming Beautiful,” but I don’t think it’s actually a love triangle,” she said. “I don’t think it’s a love triangle. I also think it’s a little more mature because it’s an adult story.”
Perrineau, 31, called for a “conversation of forgiveness” between Percy and Sam every year.
“I think this is an issue that a lot of people have dealt with, maybe not the exact scenario, but trying to figure out how to forgive people, and if possible, forgive,” she shared. “I think that’s what makes people attached to it.”
“Every Year After” is available on Prime Video.
