Off Campus author Elle Kennedy has revealed her favorite book changes from the show so far.
On Saturday, May 23, President Kennedy took to TikTok to answer the question, “Of all the changes that have taken place on television, which is your favorite and why?”
In response, Kennedy said she loves that “Justin is a musician, not an athlete.”
“I think that makes a lot of sense,” she replied. “Loved, loved Allie and Dean’s JLo/Maverick dance, and they had this wild tension even before they hooked up (in the book, the hookup happens quickly).”
The show, based on the Off Campus book series by Kennedy, follows an elite ice hockey team and the women in their lives. Season 1 focused on Hannah (Ella Bright) and Garrett (Belmont Cameli), but then Logan’s (Antonio Cipriano) story, despite being based on the original, could be Dean (Steven Cullin) first and then Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks) last.
“I hope fans of the books approach this with an open mind. Fans of this series tend to be positive. They love these characters, they love this world,” Kennedy told Us Weekly about the on-screen shakeup. “I just got back from a book trip and I literally couldn’t stop getting excited everywhere I went.”
Kennedy was looking forward to the reaction from viewers.
“They’re going to love it,” she said. “I hope people go into the movie knowing that some things will have to change in the film adaptation, but they will have the same feelings they had when they read the book.”
In addition to Bright, Cameli, Cipriano, Brooks, and Kaling, the show will introduce characters played by Mika Abdallah and Josh Huston.
“I wasn’t involved in the day-to-day process. I wasn’t in the writers’ room and I didn’t have any casting decisions,” Kennedy explained to Barron’s. “I was able to read the script as it was being written, and I was able to provide feedback, and sometimes I have Zoom conversations with the showrunners because they really appreciated the author’s input.”
She continued: “They say, ‘What are the non-negotiable scenes or things that we know we have to put in there?’ They were supportive in that sense. However, as for the final decision, it was entirely up to the creative team. ”
Kennedy said that despite providing feedback, there were no “specific” requests for what should be shown on screen.
“We went into this knowing that certain things had to be changed, which is the case with any film adaptation, but this book in particular is written in the first person, so it really conveys their thoughts. They have to find a different way to show it,” Kennedy said. “Honestly, I wanted to capture the dynamics of relationships. … I want to see the relationships. I want to see the characters in whatever situation they’re in.”
“Off Campus” is currently available on Prime Video.
